Hi Folks, I was at a surprise party this weekend, celebrating my father-in-law’s 80th birthday. The event was as well-attended as a college basement bash, and Stan looked too young to be an octogenarian! But what struck me even more were the four old friends who stood by his side that day, close since childhood. It’s a testament to the power of lifelong connection. As I chatted with guests, one conversation stuck in my mind. A family acquaintance I hadn’t seen in years spoke to me about life, the state of the world, and how he and his wife were managing it all. He shared that she was struggling. I nodded, feeling that in my bones. “What’s helping her right now?” I asked. “She’s using all the tools in her toolkit,” he summarized after a robust reply. On the ride home, I was inspired to take stock of my own toolkit. I gave myself a mental “rock on” to salute my long-standing dedication to my habits, but also acknowledged that despite my best efforts, something felt, well, off. My usual practices weren’t quite enough to maintain my personal energy. So, I asked myself: “What subtle shifts could I make? How can I feed all five of my energy tanks—physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and social—every day?” Here’s what I’m currently committed to, daily: Physical: A 20-minute walk that gets my heart rate up. Emotional: Journal Prompt. A current favorite is “What is Here Now if There Are No Problems to Solve?” Mental: Embedding 5 to 10-minute breaks into my calendar between appointments. Spiritual: Spotting and absorbing a daily delight, and doubling my celebrations (it’s not what you may think.) Social: Engaging in recurring web meetings with people who inspire me, because, like with Stan’s four lifelong friends, true connection sustains us.
